The drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi follows the Georgian Military Road, one of the country’s best-known mountain routes. Stepantsminda can take roughly three hours to reach without long stops, but a full day or an overnight stay creates a much better plan. Weather, traffic, and temporary restrictions can all change the schedule.

Building the route

From Tbilisi, the road runs through Mtskheta and alongside the Zhinvali Reservoir. Common stops include Ananuri Fortress, the Gudauri area, and panoramic viewpoints near the pass. The main route ends in Stepantsminda, also widely known as Kazbegi.
