Tbilisi to Vardzia by Rental Car: A Two-Day Route

The journey from Tbilisi to Vardzia works best as an overnight rental-car trip. The road crosses different elevations, while Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe, and Khertvisi Fortress provide worthwhile stops. Trying to see everything and return to the capital in one day creates unnecessary pressure.

Two main route options

Via Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe

This option is convenient for a first visit to the region. From Tbilisi, travel west on the main highway and continue through the Borjomi Valley toward Akhaltsikhe. After Rabati Castle, the route proceeds through Aspindza and Khertvisi to Vardzia.

Via Tsalka and Paravani Lake

The southern route crosses high terrain through Tsalka, Ninotsminda, and Akhalkalaki. Its landscape is very different, but it is more exposed to changing weather. Official tourism itineraries for this direction recommend an SUV or similar vehicle. Check the exact road and seasonal restrictions before departure.

A practical two-day plan

1. Day one. Leave Tbilisi, stop in Borjomi, continue to Akhaltsikhe, and visit Rabati. Stay overnight in Akhaltsikhe or closer to Vardzia.
2. Day two. Visit Khertvisi and Vardzia, then return on the selected route with a generous time buffer.

Check the opening hours for Vardzia and other sites before the trip. Vardzia remains an active monastic complex, so clothing and behavior should follow visitor rules.

Choosing the vehicle

In stable weather, a premium sedan or crossover can suit the Borjomi route when the itinerary stays on main roads. A premium SUV adds ground clearance and luggage space. The southern highland option requires particularly careful vehicle selection.
