Mtskheta, Jvari and Ananuri by Car: A Day Trip from Tbilisi

Mtskheta, Jvari Monastery and Ananuri make a day outside Tbilisi without the longer drive to Kazbegi. The route combines an old-town walk, a view of two rivers meeting and a stop beside Zhinvali Reservoir. A car connects the sites while leaving time to explore each one on foot.

Jvari: begin with the viewpoint

One option is to start at Jvari Monastery above Mtskheta. The view takes in the town and the meeting of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. The monastery requires its own approach: reaching central Mtskheta does not automatically bring you to Jvari.

In navigation, select Jvari Monastery near Mtskheta. Jvari Pass on the road towards Kazbegi is a different place and is not part of this itinerary. Take care on the bends during the approach, and stop for photographs only in a permitted parking area.

Mtskheta: park and walk

After Jvari, drive down to Mtskheta. For a first visit, you can focus on Svetitskhoveli and the surrounding streets. Add Samtavro if you would like more time in town instead of hurrying to the next stop.

Check the rules at your chosen parking area and keep off pedestrian streets. When entering active churches, follow their dress and conduct requirements. Services and access to individual areas may affect a visit, so keep the schedule flexible.

Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri

The next stage heads towards Zhinvali Reservoir and the Ananuri fortress complex. The complex stands beside the reservoir near the Georgian Military Highway. After the town walk, this is a good place for a longer stop before the return journey.

Use designated stopping areas. A roadside shoulder with an attractive view may be narrow or difficult for other drivers to see. Do not cross the road for a photograph unless conditions are safe. Avoid adding swimming, boat trips or other activities without checking access and operator availability separately.

Keeping the day manageable

Allow for lunch between Mtskheta and Ananuri or after visiting the complex. Continuing to Gudauri or Stepantsminda substantially expands the trip and is better treated as a separate itinerary. The aim here is to visit three places comfortably and return to Tbilisi without rushing through a schedule.

You can change the order to suit the weather and your departure time. Check road conditions beforehand and allow a buffer for traffic on the way back into the city.

A car for a shorter road trip

A comfortable sedan suits travellers who value a relaxed ride and supportive seats. Consider a premium crossover for a family or more luggage. With a coupe, check rear-seat access before booking. Choosing a vehicle class does not replace checking tyres and agreeing the route.
