Kakheti Road Trip by Rental Car: A Loop Through Sighnaghi and Telavi
A Kakheti road trip works well as a loop: drive from Tbilisi to Sighnaghi, continue to Telavi, then return via the Gombori Pass. This lets you see different parts of the region without retracing the entire journey. Allow two days, or three if you want unhurried walks and extra stops.
Day one: Tbilisi to Sighnaghi
Start with the drive to Sighnaghi and keep most of the day for the town. Its narrow, cobbled streets are better explored on foot than by trying to park beside every attraction. Leave the car in a permitted parking area. If you are staying in the old town, ask your hotel about vehicle access before arriving.
Make room for views over the Alazani Valley and a relaxed lunch. Bodbe can be a separate stop. Avoid filling the first day with a long list of villages: check-in, walks and photo stops usually take more time than the map suggests.
Day two: through the valley to Telavi
The next stage of the Tbilisi–Sighnaghi–Telavi itinerary crosses Kakheti's wine-growing landscape. Depending on your interests, choose a stop around Gurjaani or a visit to Tsinandali. Leave time in Telavi for a walk and a break before driving back. Check opening hours and booking requirements for estates, museums and wineries in advance.
If you plan a tasting, the driver must remain sober. Separate driving days from tastings or arrange a separate driver beforehand. An overnight stay alone does not establish that it is safe to drive the following morning.
Returning over Gombori
The Gombori Pass road connects Telavi with the route towards Tbilisi. It is a winding, paved road where visibility, weather and a steady pace matter. Plan to drive it in daylight. Check restrictions and the forecast before leaving; in poor conditions, consider returning through the valley via Gurjaani and Sagarejo instead.
Treat navigation estimates as planning aids, not a fixed timetable. Stops, fog and roadworks can change your schedule. If your visit to Telavi runs late, an extra night removes the pressure to rush the return journey.
Choosing a rental car for Kakheti
A premium sedan or coupe can suit the main paved roads in dry weather. A convertible is an option in mild conditions, but check luggage space with the roof folded. A roomy crossover may be more practical for a family with suitcases. All-wheel drive does not replace suitable tyres or make every side road permitted.
- Tell the rental company your route and travel dates.
- Confirm access to your accommodation, particularly away from main roads.
- Check the mileage allowance, return arrangements and permitted road types.
- Download a map and save overnight addresses before departure.
